Election ’08 and The Art of War

June 28, 2009

Well, it’s been six months since the 2008 election…and for some the shock and stress is finally starting to wear off. And as I confer with several Conservative allies and acquaintances, once they are able to shake off the post-election fatigue and express their opinions regarding the outcome of last week’s Obama-Nation invocation, I notice a common thread tying their views together: a long string of second-guessing.
Many are wondering “What now?…What do we do?”
Many are wondering “Why didn’t we win?…Why couldn’t they (the Obama supporters) see him for what he truly is…what he represents?”
Many of them are wondering “Where did we go wrong?”
And then they shake their heads sadly…because they have no clear answer to their questions.
There are times such as this…when the specter of hopelessness and chaos casts a grim pall over one’s feelings. During those times some people resort to numbing their discomfort…usually with alcohol or even harsher substances. Some folks distance themselves from their own emotional turmoil by focusing on family, work, and/or other things which they have some greater control over.
And some people tend to analyze the minutiae of the problem at hand in the hopes of finding…if not a solution…some sort of pattern, some sort of reason as to what happened and why.

This hyper-scrutiny can be utilized in detrimental ways…such as those idiots who (have the unmitigated gall to) call themselves “9/11 Truthers”.
The less said about those intellectually lazy losers….the better.

However, with proper study and the right discipline, one might…just might…see a glimpse, sense the slightest pattern, that could bring not only an understanding of the situation but could help to develop a way to even remedy the situation.
If you’ll allow me the selfish indulgence, I’d like to present to you my theory as to why Barack Obama became America’s 44th President.

In simple terms…John McCain took a dive.

He had to. There’s no other reasonable explanation for his sloppy campaign, for his lackluster debates, for his inability or unwillingness to discuss the real issues that voters faced…or for the concerns many voters had regarding his opponent.
John McCain is a smarter man than that….much smarter than that. He has seen, firsthand, the vicious animal that is Washington, D.C. politics…witnessed it for decades, in fact. Surely a man who has spent so many years in such close proximity to that ruthless Beltway beast would get a feel for the behavior of that beast….otherwise, we would be better off without him in The White House!
Which then begs the question: why did he allow himself to lose?

Again, in simple terms…Sun Tzu.

The legendary Chinese philosopher, believed to have lived over 2,500 years ago, who authored what is considered the definitive example of Taoist Strategy: The Sun Tzu Ping Fa…a veritable masterpiece on warfare planning, preparation, and implementation…not just on political conflict and warfare, but also on business, administration, and even personal growth.
In studying Sun Tzu’s “profound common sense” (my term for his remarkable treatise) in relation to McCain’s defeat, I begin to see patterns…designs…and I also see an objective, a clarity of purpose, that begs for implementation.

Not by McCain and the Republicans in Washington, D.C., however…but by us.

All warfare is based on deception.

For eight years, the Angry Left has stewed and whined about how the 2000 election was stolen, about how the Republicans cheated, and about how George W. Bush was an illegitimate President…or so we thought.
It turns out that for eight years, they’ve secretly planned, prepared and finagled for this very outcome: the topping of the so-called “Bush Regime” and the installation of their own personal savior to The White House. Though their efforts seemed successful (and I’m not even going to discuss the silliness about the idea of “toppling” a non-existent “Bush Regime”!), many of them regard this as…to use a phrase much derided during their eight years of whining…”Mission Accomplished”.
What’s worse, the Republican Party seems fractured…internal sniping, anonymous back-biting, head-scratching discombobulation…what a mess! Clearly the Republicans are hardly in any condition to mount an effective opposition to any legislative and executive efforts enacted by the newly-enthroned Left.
However, anybody who’s played the game as a child knows that it’s much easier to become King of the Hill than it is to remain King of the Hill.
And with such a defeat as the one they showed those “evil, cheating Republicans”, many on the Left believe that the fight is won…and even more even believe that the hard part is over.

Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive.

In spite of the anxiety that has seemingly permeated the Right, regarding the future of our great country, I have no fear that America will convert to a Socialist/Marxist nation…the likes of which compare to the former Soviet Union, North Korea, or Cuba. Heck, I’m not even worried about our nation becoming a crypto-Socialist nation…comparable to Switzerland, Belgium, or France. There are far, far too many people in positions of significant power and authority that would never allow such a thing to happen. America’s wildly successful Capitalist venture is too critical to the system that they depend on to survive…both in America and throughout the world.
Killing, crippling, or even transforming that system would be akin to a CEO allowing his key production facility to burn to the ground in a fire.
So, the fundamental principles of the American system are not under threat. The fundamental principles of American values, however…that’s a different story. And for those who haven’t been paying attention, these principles have been under siege for decades…a systematic devaluation of the core beliefs that have truly made America (arguably) the greatest nation in human history. If four years under an Obama Administration can have any serious negative impact upon those values, it is only through this insidiously slow degradation and re-education that few have noticed…and even fewer cared about…since the 1960’s. An insidious effort that, one could postulate, culminated in the results of November 4th, 2008. Those at the forefront of this effort feel vindicated and their followers feel triumphant….though they most likely do not know why.
It is here that we can…and must…fight back. It is here where we must “de-throne the King” and re-take the hill.

If his forces are united, separate them.

The Hard, Angry Left have made impressive gains into the hallowed halls of Washington, D.C.
But they couldn’t do it alone…and they didn’t. They anointed themselves ‘The Party of Inclusion’…and filled their ranks with pretty much every outspoken special interest group under the sun. They figured that they could utilize the old adage: “Safety In Numbers”. But such strange and even disparate alliances carry a hefty price….because now the Democrat Party…aka The Party of Dependence…is now swollen to the rafters with a bunch of savvy, selfish politicos, all holding out their hands in anticipation of their share of the grand prize to which they feel entitled. Don’t think for a second that any of them would settle for a mere pittance of the reward they so richly deserve (in their minds) for the election of Obama and the Democrat control of Congress. To say nothing of the implication that these groups, although claiming to be members in good standing within the same party, do not, in fact, share the same goals. The Homosexual community, for example, who lobbied hard for the “No On 8” ballot measure on California which would’ve legalized same-sex marriage, stands side-by-side with the African-American community, who voted “Yes On 8” in overwhelming numbers to ban same-sex marriage in California. These many differences and disparities within the Democrat Party are going to come to the forefront in the next few years…causing disagreements, conflicts, and schisms that could threaten to tear apart the “Party of Inclusion“.
And it is here that the Republicans can capitalize on such weaknesses, gaining the trust of groups that would’ve never even considered an amicable association with the Right.

If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant.

At this time, the most noticeable members of the current Democrat Party are what I, and many others refer to as the Angry Left. They live up to their name. Currently, there is video footage circulating on YouTube & throughout the internet depicting an elderly woman carrying a cross to a “No On 8” Rally in San Francisco…whereupon she is immediately accosted, verbally assaulted, and her makeshift crucifix is knocked from her hands and vandalized by the violent, intolerant angry mob of Homosexual activists. Even the Mainstream Media is hopping on the bandwagon regarding an incident like this.
Such examples of the hate and intolerance frequently displayed by the Left….but rarely ever exposed by the Media, must be spotlighted for the public at large. The Right can, should, and must showcase the unmitigated gall, the self-serving hypocrisy, and the deep-seated hate that the the Angry Left has shown…and the Democrat Party has capitalized upon…these past several years. Such despicable behavior by some of their own speak volumes as to what makes up today’s Democrat Party…and are far more effective than anything a person on the Right can possibly say about them.

In country where high roads intersect, join hands with your allies.

Through such exposure of the intolerance of the Left, many moderates will feel a sense of ambivalence to their once-proud beliefs. This would be the opportune time to present the side of Republicans that rarely gets any proper exposure.
Several years ago, John McCain was regarded by many in the Republican Party as a R.I.N.O. (Republican In Name Only). His constant reaching across the so-called aisle to support democrat policies and initiatives angered several on the Right to even consider a plan to remove McCain from the GOP ticket altogether.
Yet in 2008, McCain was selected to represent the Republican Party during the presidential election.
Sounds rather tolerant of them, don’t you think?
Several years ago, Joe Lieberman was roundly criticized by the Democrat Party for his constant reaching across the aisle to his Republican associates in an effort to show and promote bipartisanship in Congress.
In 2008, however, the Democrat leadership are conspiring to have Lieberman expelled from their ranks.
How tolerant…how inclusive…is that?
This instance should shine like a beacon for all Americans to see. This could be the smart opportunity to garner support…to build bridges…to show that the true party of inclusion isn’t the one who only regards themselves as such.
For many years, the Republicans have been regarded as the party of bigots, haters, and elitists….people who believe that their way is the only way, who demonize and excoriate those who don’t share their views, and who believe that the opinions of others are not worth any credibility or regard.
Those of us on the Right have known for years that such designations are unfounded…it’s long overdue for the rest of the world to know as well. Use their own hatred, their own intolerance, their own narcissistic invective against them. It’s certain to drive the Left insane.

Therefore the clever combatant imposes his will on the enemy, but does not allow the enemy’s will to be imposed on him.

We’ve known for years what kind of game they play, as well as the type of players that they are.
The Left expects us to play to their level.
We can do much better than that.

Hence the saying: If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.

You may have noticed that, although I started my blog discussing the actions of the Republicans in Washington, D.C., I did not reference them in regards to what The Republican Party should and must do in the next four years in order to protect and defend our way of life…the way that has made America the great nation it is.

This was deliberate.

Once again, in simple terms…Democrats sit around expecting the government to solve their problems for them.
Republicans…true Republicans…don’t need government to step in and save the day. They solve their problems themselves.

More on this later…
